Wake County School Updates

Teacher Appreciation Week | May 4 - 8
Appreciation is a word that only begins to describe how we feel about teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week - especially this year. They’ve been asked to do the impossible with remote learning, and have delivered in so many inspiring ways. That is why we want to make a special effort to ‘virtually’ celebrate our phenomenal teachers May 4-8. Principals and PTAs will be notifying parents with details about how they will be celebrating teachers. We encourage everyone to join in by using #WCPSSThankATeacher when giving a shout out to a favorite teacher or to all teachers.

Graduation Update
A team of Central Services administrators has been exploring a number of alternatives should we not be able to go forward with traditional graduation ceremonies. As part of their work, we will be connecting with senior class leaders, PTA representatives and principals from across the district to hear their feedback and suggestions about how we might proceed with celebrating the Class of 2020. Their input will help to inform our decision-making as we determine what is feasible under public health guidelines. We intend to have a formal decision within the next two weeks.

Messages from Board of Education Chair and Superintendent
Board of Education Chair Keith Sutton and Superintendent Cathy Moore held their weekly virtual briefing today where they discuss what impacts COVID-19 might have on the upcoming school year.

National Principals’ DayToday is National School Principals' Day! We know that principals work very hard providing guidance and support for teachers, and also serving as leaders in their respective communities. During these extraordinary times, our principals have truly stepped up their roles by navigating with their staff and families the many changes and challenges of remote learning. Please take a moment to email your thanks to your child’s principal, and/or post a thank-you on social media, tagging your school!

On With the Show!
In the midst of the challenges we have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, we haven't forgotten about the enormous amount of talent displayed by our students. A few of our spring musicals and concerts got to happen right before we transitioned to remote learning. Many did not. But the show must go on (one way or another)! We will be sharing highlights representing the abundance of talent that floods our school district on social media. Follow us on Facebook or share your own photos and videos using the hashtag: #WCPSSOnWithTheShow

#WCPSSHero: Elana Christmas
Many amazing WCPSS employees go above and beyond to help students, families and our colleagues during these challenging times. This week we celebrate Elana Christmas, Transportation Team Leader in Knightdale. During these trying times of the pandemic, Ms. Christmas has been serving children food every day. When the location of the food service changed, Ms Christmas personally drove through an entire subdivision, reaching out to the residents to share information about the new location. She also transports food to those who were unable to walk to the site. Ms. Christmas is our #WCPSSHero!

Food Service for Students
May 1 is School Lunch Hero Day and we are grateful for our Child Nutrition and Transportation staff who continue to provide free food every weekday at 46 different food distribution locations throughout the county.
  • New distribution sites open Monday at the following school locations: Lake Myra Elementary, Wakelon Elementary, Banks Road Elementary, Holly Springs Elementary, Lynn Road Elementary and Willow Springs High.
  • We’re also adding new Big Bus Food Truck routes and some new community partner food distribution locations. Please check wcpss.net/food for all of our food distribution sites, dates, times and updated information.
  • For Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) Card updates please check the DHHS website. A free and reduced lunch price application is needed to qualify for P-EBT benefits.

The Dillard Drive Elementary School Parent Teacher Association (DDES PTA) is a community of parents/guardians, teachers, and staff. We aim to foster and provide a positive space for our students through volunteer support, educational initiatives, and collaboration with our neighboring communities and businesses. As a parent/guardian of a DDES student, the most important resource of the PTA is YOU!

If you are interested in volunteering* your time to the PTA, please contact dillarddrivepta@gmail.com. Some of the upcoming opportunities we need your help for are:

  • Hospitality for staff appreciation
  • Book Fair
  • International Festival

Let’s work together to a create an empowering environment for our students, teachers, and parents!

*Please remember to complete a volunteer application in the front office if you do not already have a current application on file.
